Big Sean’s annual charity weekend is back in Detroit this year after COVID canceled the family-friendly event in 2020. The Detroit-bred rap star — through his Sean Anderson Foundation — started hosting the Detroit’s On Now (D.O.N) Weekend in 2018. The event was established as a celebration of the city and the people who live in it.

This year, the Sean Anderson Foundation partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan to give the community a weekend filled with activities, such as art exhibits, yoga and live performances by Detroit artists. Flyers for D.O.N. Weekend list bouncy houses, face painting, carnival games, hair braiding and onsite COVID vaccinations.

Plus, Sean Don is also slated to face off against Detroit’s City Council President Mary Sheffield in a celebrity kickball tournament. Aspiring musicians will be pleased to hear that the Finally Famous rapper is opening another recording studio in his hometown too. Back in 2015, he unveiled a recording studio for students at his high school alma mater, Cass Technical High School. And during the 2019 D.O.N Weekend, Sean gave the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan the state-of-the-art Sean Anderson Foundation Content & Production Studio.

Sean’s mom, Myra Anderson, told The Detroit News in 2019 that when she helped come up with the premise of D.O.N. Weekend she “wanted it to have meaning.” “I want people to go away with something that’s more lasting in their lives than just having fun for a few days,” Anderson said.

Since 2012, Anderson has served as the executive director and president of the foundation she helped her son build. D.O.N. Weekend, according to her, “is an opportunity for Sean to give back to Detroit. It’s his way of honoring the people that have stayed here in the city that have really been holding down Detroit through thick and thin.”

D.O.N. Weekend is scheduled to take place from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 – 29 at Lloyd H. Diehl Boys and Girls Club, 4242 Collingwood St. Registration via Donweekend.org is free.
