FOUNDATION ORIGIN

The Sean Michael Anderson Foundation is a Michigan non-profit corporation organized on May 24, 2012 for charitable and educational purposes. The inspiration behind the foundation is derived from its name sake Sean Anderson, a recording artist raised in Detroit, and his unwavering commitment to improve the quality of life for children and families in his hometown.

Like many other urban industrial cities, suburban flight, and a mass exodus of jobs overseas, combined with a national economic crisis, have had a devastating effect on Detroit. The city’s population has shrunk from an all time high of nearly 2 million in 1950 to 700,000 residents today. Widespread unemployment and the city’s eroding tax base have left Detroit fiscally challenged when it comes to addressing the housing, educational, health care and recreational needs of its remaining citizens. The children of Detroit have been voiceless victims in this drastic turn of events. Detroit has the third highest number of homeless families with children (6,149) in the country. Detroit children are enrolled in a public school system where 2% of the student body (1,463) are homeless and 60% do not reach high school graduation. Detroit’s infant mortality rate, 14.8 deaths per 1,000 live births is more than double the national average of 6.3 deaths per 1,000 births. The recreational options for Detroit children are far and few and continue to dwindle. The city has a total of 14 recreation centers for use by the more than 220,000 children under the age of 18 who reside in Detroit.

It was against this backdrop that Sean Anderson honed his skills as an entertainer and a rapper. Following the release of his debut album in 2011, Anderson has enjoyed success and national acclaim. Despite Detroit’s battered public image, at a time when many native Detroit entertainers distance themselves from the city, Sean openly embraces Detroit. A self-appointed goodwill ambassador for the city, Sean proudly claims Detroit as his hometown and extols its virtues publicly in his music and interviews. The Sean Michael Anderson Foundation will allow the organization, by association, to use Sean’s name recognition and public persona to bring awareness to these conditions and to help raise money to assist Detroit area children as well as disadvantaged youth across the country.
